A dental crown — sometimes called a "cap" — is one of the most common restorations in dentistry. It covers a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth completely, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. If you need one or more crowns, Colombia offers the same materials and fabrication technology as US dental offices at 60–80% less cost.
When You Need a Crown
- Large cavity that's too big for a filling to support
- Cracked or fractured tooth that needs structural reinforcement
- After a root canal — the treated tooth becomes brittle and needs protection
- Severely worn teeth from grinding (bruxism)
- Over a dental implant — the crown is the visible tooth portion
- Cosmetic improvement — reshaping a misshapen or severely discolored tooth
Crown Materials Compared
| Material | Strength | Aesthetics | Best For | Colombia Cost | US Cost | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) | Good | Good | Back teeth, bridges | $150–$250 | $800–$1,200 | 10–15 years |
| E.max (lithium disilicate) | Good | Excellent | Front teeth, aesthetic zone | $250–$400 | $1,000–$1,500 | 15–20+ years |
| Zirconia (monolithic) | Excellent | Very Good | Back teeth, bruxers | $250–$400 | $1,000–$1,500 | 15–20+ years |
| Gold | Excellent | Poor (metallic) | Back teeth, longevity | $300–$500 | $1,000–$2,500 | 20–30+ years |
| CEREC (same-day) | Good | Good–Very Good | Single crowns, time savings | $300–$450 | $1,000–$1,800 | 10–15+ years |
PFM (Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal)
The workhorse crown for decades. A metal framework provides strength; porcelain on the outside provides a tooth-colored appearance. The main drawback: a dark line can appear at the gum margin over time as gums recede, exposing the metal edge. Still a solid choice for back teeth where aesthetics are less critical.
E.max (All-Ceramic)
The aesthetic gold standard. No metal substructure means no dark line risk, and the translucency mimics natural enamel beautifully. Ideal for front teeth and the "smile zone." Strong enough for most applications, though not recommended for patients with severe bruxism.
Zirconia
The strength leader. Virtually indestructible under normal bite forces. Modern multilayer zirconia offers improved aesthetics over earlier opaque versions. First choice for back teeth, bridges, and patients who grind.
CEREC Same-Day Crowns
CAD/CAM technology mills a crown from a ceramic block in 15–20 minutes, right in the dental office. No impressions, no temporary crown, no second visit. The trade-off: CEREC crowns are milled from a single block, which limits color layering compared to lab-crafted crowns. Best for single crowns on back teeth where speed matters more than cosmetic perfection.
The Crown Process in Colombia
Traditional (Lab-Fabricated) — 5–7 Days
Day 1: Tooth preparation (reshaping to accommodate the crown), digital scan or impression, shade matching, temporary crown placed.
Days 2–5: Lab fabrication. Your permanent crown is crafted by a skilled ceramist.
Day 5–6: Temporary removed, permanent crown tried in, adjusted for fit and bite, permanently cemented.
Day 7: Follow-up check.
CEREC Same-Day — 1–2 Hours
Preparation, digital scan, in-office milling, and placement all happen in a single appointment. Ideal for dental tourists who want to minimize trip length.
Crown vs. Veneer vs. Onlay
Not every damaged tooth needs a full crown. Sometimes a less invasive option is better:
- Veneer: Covers only the front surface. Best for cosmetic improvement on structurally sound teeth. Less tooth reduction than a crown.
- Onlay/inlay: Covers part of the biting surface. A conservative alternative when damage is limited to one area of the tooth. Preserves more natural tooth structure.
- Crown: Covers the entire tooth. Necessary when the tooth is significantly damaged, has had a root canal, or needs complete structural support.
A good Colombian dentist will recommend the most conservative option that addresses your clinical need — not automatically default to a crown when a veneer or onlay would suffice.
Dental crowns in Colombia cost $150–$400 depending on material — vs. $800–$1,500 in the US. E.max is the aesthetic leader for front teeth; zirconia is the strength leader for back teeth; PFM remains a reliable budget option. The process takes 5–7 days for lab-crafted crowns or same-day for CEREC. Ask your dentist to recommend the most conservative restoration — a veneer or onlay may serve you better than a full crown.
