The short version: Never fly to Colombia for dental work without a treatment plan in hand. A virtual consultation — using photos and x-rays you can get from your local dentist — lets you compare clinics, understand your costs, and avoid surprises. This guide walks you through the process step by step.
The 8-Photo Protocol
Most Colombian clinics can provide a preliminary treatment plan from photos alone. Here is what to send:
- Full smile (front): Natural smile, teeth together
- Wide smile (front): Maximum smile showing all visible teeth
- Retracted front: Pull lips back to show upper and lower teeth together
- Upper arch: Open wide, tilt head back, photograph upper teeth from below
- Lower arch: Open wide, photograph lower teeth from above
- Right side bite: Retracted, showing how teeth meet on the right
- Left side bite: Same for the left side
- Close-up of problem areas: Any damaged, missing, or discoloured teeth
Use your phone's rear camera (not selfie camera) for better quality. Use natural daylight. Pull your lips back with your fingers or two spoons for the retracted shots. A helper makes this much easier.
X-Rays That Matter
For a comprehensive treatment plan, clinics need imaging beyond photos:
- Panoramic x-ray (OPG): Shows all teeth, jawbone, sinuses, and TMJ. Essential for implant planning. Cost at US dentist: $25–$150
- CBCT scan (3D cone beam): Required for implant cases, especially All-on-4. Shows bone density and volume in 3D. Cost: $150–$350
- Periapical x-rays: Close-up shots of individual teeth if root canal or specific issues are present
Request digital copies (not printed film) so you can email them. Most US dental offices will provide these on request — they are your records, you have a legal right to them.
Reading a Treatment Plan
A legitimate treatment plan from a Colombian clinic should include:
- A tooth-by-tooth breakdown of proposed work
- Specific materials named (e.g., "IPS e.max veneers" not just "porcelain veneers")
- Implant brand and model if applicable
- Timeline — how many appointments, how many days
- Itemised pricing for each procedure
- What is included (consultation, temporary restorations, follow-up)
- What is NOT included (additional procedures that may be needed)
A treatment plan that gives you a single lump-sum price without a tooth-by-tooth breakdown is not a plan — it is a sales pitch. Walk away.
Comparing Quotes
Get treatment plans from 2–3 clinics minimum. When comparing:
- Compare materials, not just prices. A $300 veneer in e.max is different from a $300 veneer in unspecified "porcelain"
- Compare what is included. Some quotes include temporaries, follow-ups, and nightguard; others do not
- Check the timeline. If one clinic says 3 days for what others say takes 7, ask why
- Ask about contingencies. "What if you find a problem during treatment that was not visible in x-rays?"
Getting a Second Opinion at Home
Take your Colombian treatment plans to your local dentist and ask for their clinical opinion. They may disagree with the approach — that is valuable information. A US dentist who says "that plan looks reasonable, I would just add X" is giving you confirmation. One who says "they are proposing unnecessary work" is protecting you.
