The short version: If you have been told you cannot get dental implants because of insufficient jawbone, zygomatic implants may be an option. These specialised implants anchor in the cheekbone (zygoma) rather than the jawbone, bypassing the need for bone grafting. Available at select Colombian clinics with trained maxillofacial surgeons at $4,000β$8,000 per arch versus $15,000β$30,000 in the US.
What Are Zygomatic Implants?
Standard dental implants are placed in the alveolar bone β the ridge of bone that held your natural teeth. When this bone has deteriorated significantly (due to long-term tooth loss, periodontal disease, or failed previous implants), there may not be enough bone to support a standard implant.
Zygomatic implants solve this by anchoring in the zygomatic bone β the dense cheekbone above the upper jaw. At 30β55mm long (compared to 10β15mm for standard implants), they reach into anatomically strong bone that does not resorb the way jawbone does. This eliminates the need for bone grafting, sinus lifts, and the 4β9 month healing wait those procedures require.
Who Needs Zygomatic Implants?
- Patients with severe upper jaw bone loss who have been denied standard implants
- Failed bone graft patients
- Patients who want to avoid the 6β12 month timeline of grafting + healing + implant placement
- Patients with severe maxillary atrophy who need full-arch restoration
| Factor | Standard Implants | Bone Graft + Standard | Zygomatic Implants |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bone requirement | Adequate jawbone needed | Builds new bone first | No jawbone needed |
| Procedures | 1 surgery | 2β3 surgeries | 1 surgery |
| Total timeline | 3β6 months | 9β18 months | Immediate to 3 months |
| Colombia price/arch | $6,500β$11,000 | $8,000β$14,000 | $4,000β$8,000 |
| US price/arch | $20,000β$30,000 | $25,000β$40,000 | $15,000β$30,000 |
| Surgeon required | Implantologist | Implantologist + oral surgeon | Maxillofacial surgeon (specialised) |
Zygomatic implants require a maxillofacial surgeon with specific training β not every implantologist can place them. In MedellΓn and BogotΓ‘, select clinics have surgeons with this expertise, but it is not universally available. We verify this before making any referral.
Alternatives for Low-Bone Patients
Zygomatic implants are not the only option. Depending on your specific anatomy, your surgeon may recommend:
- Short implants (6β8mm): Newer designs that work in reduced bone height. Less invasive, lower cost
- Pterygoid implants: Anchor in the pterygoid bone at the back of the upper jaw. Can be combined with zygomatic implants
- Bone grafting + standard implants: Slower (6β12 months total) but well-established approach. Bone graft costs $500β$1,500 in Colombia
- Subperiosteal implants: Custom-fabricated framework that sits on top of the jawbone rather than inside it. Rare but available for extreme cases
