Direct Flights from the US
Colombia has excellent air connectivity with the United States. Medellín's José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) and Bogotá's El Dorado International Airport (BOG) both receive daily direct flights from major US hubs. Cartagena's Rafael Núñez Airport (CTG) also has seasonal and year-round direct service from several US cities.

From South Florida, Medellín is closer than Los Angeles. From Atlanta, it's closer than Seattle. For most of the eastern US, Colombia is a shorter flight than the West Coast.
Closer Than the Alternatives
When comparing dental tourism destinations, travel time matters. You are already taking time off for treatment — adding 12+ hours of travel on top of that is a significant burden, especially when you'll be recovering from dental work on the return flight.
Colombia
Mexico (Cancún)
Turkey
Turkey and Thailand are popular dental tourism destinations, but the 11–20+ hour travel times create real challenges: severe jet lag during your treatment window, longer exposure to DVT risk on flights, and the difficulty of returning for follow-up appointments if needed. Colombia's proximity means you can fly home the day after your last appointment and be back in your own bed that evening.
Same Time Zone Advantage
Colombia operates on Colombia Standard Time (COT), which is UTC−5 — the same as US Eastern Standard Time. During daylight saving time, Colombia is one hour behind the eastern US. This matters more than people realize:
- No jet lag. You arrive feeling the same as you would landing in a different US city.
- Virtual consultations before and after your trip happen during normal business hours for both you and your dentist.
- Follow-up calls with your Colombian dentist don't require setting an alarm for 3 AM.
- You can stay connected with work and family without time zone gymnastics.
No Visa Required for US Citizens
US citizens receive an automatic 90-day tourist stamp upon arrival in Colombia. No visa application, no advance paperwork, no fees. You present your passport at immigration, receive your stamp, and walk through. Canadian, UK, and EU citizens also enter visa-free.
For dental tourism trips of 5–14 days, this is more than sufficient. If you're combining dental work with an extended vacation — or returning for implant Phase II — the 90-day window provides ample flexibility.
Flight Booking Tip
Book your outbound flight for the day before your first appointment to arrive fresh. For veneer or crown work (4–7 days), book your return flight for the day after your final fitting. For implant placement, your clinic will advise on the ideal departure timing based on your specific procedure. Round-trip flights from Miami to Medellín regularly run $250–$400 on Spirit and Avianca.
Getting Around Once You Land
Colombia is remarkably easy to navigate as an English-speaking visitor. Uber and DiDi operate in all major cities and are the recommended way to get around — safe, affordable, and you can see the fare before you ride. From Medellín's airport, the trip to El Poblado (where most dental clinics are located) takes about 45 minutes and costs $12–$18 via Uber.
Many dental clinics that work with international patients offer airport pickup service, either included in their package or for a modest fee. Some arrange transportation for all appointments during your stay.
Accommodations Near Dental Clinics
El Poblado in Medellín and Zona T/Chapinero in Bogotá are the neighborhoods where most international dental clinics are located. Both areas have abundant accommodation options ranging from budget-friendly Airbnbs ($30–$60/night) to boutique hotels ($80–$150/night) to luxury properties. Many patients find that staying within walking distance of their clinic makes the experience feel less like a medical trip and more like a vacation with dental appointments.
