Bottom line up front: Digital Smile Design is a planning technology that lets you see your new smile before any treatment begins. Using facial photos, intraoral scans, and specialized software, your dentist designs your ideal smile digitally — adjusting tooth shape, size, color, and alignment — and shows you the result on screen. You approve it, request changes, and give the green light before any irreversible work happens. It is standard practice at top Colombian dental clinics.
How DSD Works
Step 1 — Capture: Your dentist takes detailed facial photos, video, and a 3D intraoral scan using an iTero or 3Shape scanner. This creates a precise digital model of your teeth, gums, and facial proportions.
Step 2 — Design: Using DSD software and CAD/CAM tools (Exocad is the most common), the dentist designs your new smile based on facial symmetry, lip line, tooth proportions, and your aesthetic preferences. You see the proposed result as a 3D digital model.
Step 3 — Preview: At top clinics, a physical mock-up is placed over your teeth — temporary composite shaped to match the digital design. You see and feel the proposed result in your mouth, check phonetics (how you speak), and approve before committing.
Step 4 — Fabrication: Once approved, the digital design feeds directly into the lab's CAD/CAM milling machines. Your veneers or crowns are precision-manufactured to match the approved design exactly.
Why It Matters for Dental Tourists
When you are traveling thousands of miles for dental work, eliminating uncertainty is critical. DSD means you know exactly what your smile will look like before any permanent changes are made. There are no surprises, no "I didn't expect it to look like that" moments. The design is your contract — the lab manufactures exactly what you approved.
