Medicare won't pay for your implants or dentures. Here's what will help.

In most cases Original Medicare doesn't cover routine dental care, dentures or implants. Here's what Medicare Advantage dental plans tend to cap, what an implant costs in the US, and how to get a written quote from a Medellín clinic.

What Original Medicare covers

According to Medicare.gov, Medicare in most cases doesn't cover routine cleanings, fillings, extractions, dentures or implants.

It may cover some dental services tied to a covered medical treatment, such as:

  • an oral exam before a kidney or other organ transplant
  • removing teeth to treat a mouth infection before cancer treatment
  • dental exams before and during dialysis for end-stage renal disease
  • some dental services when you're admitted to a hospital for the procedure

Medicare Advantage dental: check the cap

Most Medicare Advantage plans include some dental. In 2021, 94% of people in individual Medicare Advantage plans had access to some dental coverage, according to KFF.

The catch is the yearly limit. Among plans with more extensive dental benefits, KFF found the average annual limit was about $1,300.

KFF's figures are from 2019 to 2021, the most recent detailed analysis we found. Your plan's limit may differ.

Compare a written quote from Medellín

If you're paying most of the bill yourself, it's worth comparing a few written quotes, including one from abroad. A quote should list every step: extractions, implants, abutments, crowns or the full arch, scans and follow-up visits.

How a quote works

  1. Send what you have

X-rays, a panoramic scan or clear photos of your teeth, plus a short note on what's bothering you. WhatsApp is fine.

  2. Get a written plan

A Medellín dentist reviews your records and sends an itemized treatment plan and price. Ask anything before you agree to anything.

  3. Plan the trip

Implant work often happens in stages, with healing time between visits. Your plan should say how many visits you'd need and how long each takes.

  4. Treatment and records

Keep copies of every X-ray, record and receipt. Your dentist at home will want them.

Questions about Medicare and dental work

Does Medicare cover dental implants?

Original Medicare doesn't in most cases. Some Medicare Advantage plans include implant coverage, usually under a yearly dollar limit. Check your plan's Evidence of Coverage for the exact limit and what counts toward it.

Does a Medigap policy add dental coverage?

No. Medigap policies help pay your share of costs for services Original Medicare covers, and routine dental care isn't one of them.

Will Medicare pay for dental work I get in Colombia?

No. Original Medicare doesn't cover routine dental work, at home or abroad. Some Medicare Advantage or standalone dental plans may reimburse care abroad; ask your plan before you travel.

I'm also a veteran. Does that change anything?

Possibly. Some veterans qualify for VA dental care. Check your VA dental eligibility before you pay out of pocket.

Is Colombia Dentist part of Medicare?

No. We're an independent referral service, not affiliated with or endorsed by Medicare or the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
