Does the VA cover dental implants?
Sometimes. The VA pays for implants only if you're eligible for VA dental care and a VA dentist decides implants are the right treatment. Most veterans aren't eligible.
The VA's own numbers set the scene. Of the nearly 9 million veterans enrolled in VA health care, about 26% are eligible for VA dental care, the VA said in February 2026. In fiscal year 2025, 888,051 veterans received dental care through the VA.
Who can get full VA dental care
Federal rules (38 CFR 17.161) sort veterans into dental classes. Three groups can get any needed dental treatment:
- Class I: veterans with a service-connected dental disability that the VA rates for compensation.
- Class II(c): former prisoners of war.
- Class IV: veterans rated 100% service-connected, or paid at the 100% rate because they can't work.
If you're in one of these groups, ask your VA dental clinic whether implants fit your case. The rules cover treatment that's reasonably necessary, and the VA dentist decides what that means for you.
Who gets one-time or limited care
Other classes cover a specific problem, not ongoing dental care:
- Class II: recently discharged veterans with a service-connected dental condition that isn't rated for pay. You need 90 or more days of service, no full dental exam and treatment before discharge, and you must apply within 180 days. It's a one-time correction.
- Class II(b): veterans in certain VA homeless programs get a one-time course of care.
- Class III: a dental problem that's making a service-connected condition worse. Treatment covers that problem.
- Class V: Veteran Readiness and Employment participants get dental care the program needs.
- Class VI: veterans getting VA care for a condition a dental problem complicates get the care that's medically necessary for it.

If you don't qualify: VADIP
Veterans enrolled in VA health care, and people enrolled in CHAMPVA, can buy dental insurance at a reduced cost through the VA Dental Insurance Program. It's private insurance, so read what it pays for implants, its yearly maximum and any waiting periods before you buy.
The nonprofit Everyone for Veterans also provides free dental care to veterans who qualify.
Will the VA pay for implants abroad?
Only through the Foreign Medical Program, and only for service-connected conditions. FMP reimburses care outside the US for a VA-rated service-connected disability or a condition that makes one worse. Implant work isn't covered unless your dental condition is service-connected. Here's how FMP works in Colombia.
What implants cost
The American Academy of Implant Dentistry puts one implant at about $3,000 to $6,000 in the US, as reported by WTOP in January 2026. Three Medellín practices publish prices of $800 to $2,100 for a single implant with abutment and crown (Colombia Care Dental, Smile Dental Center, Dra. Carolina Macareno). If you're paying out of pocket, compare a few written quotes, including one from abroad. A good quote lists every step: extractions, the implant, the abutment, the crown, scans and follow-up visits.

A bill could change this
The Dental Care for Veterans Act (H.R. 210) would phase in dental care for every veteran enrolled in VA health care over four years. It hasn't become law. What the bill would change.
